Antique American Furniture Of The 19th Century

American furniture of the 19th Century was directly
influenced by English and French designs. Not surprisingly,
many of the earliest woodworkers in the United States came
from Europe, and brought with them an already-flourishing
industry. A worldwide fascination with classical lines and
intricately detailed designs had moved to North America and
started what would become a fundamental part of history.

The period of 1790 through to the early 1800s is known as
"Federal" because it coincides with the establishment of the
United States, although it is referred to as neoclassical
elsewhere. Primarily inspired by Roman styles, many of the
pieces designed during this time contain sharp contrasts of
light and dark wood.

One of the most prevalent English cabinetmakers who helped
to form this type of design was George Hepplewhite. While
little personal details about Hepplewhite are known, his
unique, creative eye influenced woodworkers for years.

Furniture from this period has distinguishable
characteristics, including curvy shapes, decorative inlays,
and slender, tapered legs. Chair backs were usually designed
in the shapes of ovals or shields, a defining attribute of
this time.

Perhaps the most influential of all designs in the Federal
period was that of Thomas Sheraton. Another English
cabinetmaker, Sheraton became famous for publishing The
Cabinet Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, which gained
instant fame. Approximately six hundred woodworkers
subscribed to his book, providing an indirect invitation to
copy his distinctive style.

As tastes and styles changed, the Federal-inspired pieces
diminished in popularity. The following fifty years
developed from French designs. Veering away from the Roman
look, American furniture began to assume Egyptian and Greek
detailing, such as bronze decorations and mahogany veneers.

Although many cabinetmakers were producing similar pieces,
several American cities developed their own style. In
particular, the renowned craftsmen of Boston, Baltimore,
Philadelphia and New York all contributed significantly to
the history of American furniture.

Antique American pieces are admired by collectors and
dealers worldwide. As with any other type of antique, the
better the condition, the higher the value. True antiques
are at least 150 years old, although some pieces at the
100-year mark are often considered as antiques as well.

Antique furniture is usually placed in one of five
categories: good, better, best, superior and masterpiece.
"Good" is the equivalent to average or below, "better"
contains some kind of minor imperfection(s), "best" contains
enough quality and craftsmanship to easily become a part of
a collection, "superior" describes a piece that is flawless,
and "masterpiece" is used to express a design that surpasses
the expectations of that particular era.

Early American furniture designs were directly inspired by

Roman Antiques, Britain - As Rome Withdrew, Germanics
Created English And Free Trade To The World

It is a fascinating difference that may have to do with
climate. After the Ice Ages, fewer people had trickled back
into Britain even by the time of the Romans. In contrast,
people in Gaul had been able to survive even the Ice Ages,
and their populations expanded much more quickly than
further north in Britain.

So, even yet, the Germanic Franks, like Julius Caesar before
them, arrived, saw and conquered Gaul. But unlike Julius
Caesar, who had brought Latin and a greater civilization,
the more rugged fur skinned Franks dropped their Anglo Saxon
dialect, which is now generally shared by Britain, America,
Canada, Australia and now much of the world.

Southern Europe still speaks variants of Latin, whether
Italian, French, Spanish, Portugal, pockets elsewhere
including Romania, and of course former and present colonies
of France.

And, one might point out, the Anglo Saxon dialects that
pushed into Celtic Britain changed Celt into a strange
native dialect in western Wales, Scotland and Ireland. As
for England, my middle name Arthur was really a Celtic
Prince whose Camelot I have visited, and he was fighting off
the Saxons, who took over.

And my geneology from my father confirms that back around
450 A.D we had a Saxon kind of warrior daddy arrive on the
Dorset beach and decide the cutest Celtic girl in the
nearest village was His wife. Thus my first name is Germanic
and my second name is Celtic, and my last name is Saxon
refined by the French Court as being senior, or the, of our
district.

If you found that difficult to follow, I could say that the
geneology of my father, which I met and confirmed with the
Premier Baronet of Great Britain who is my distant cousin,
our name was Celtic Ash and we fought against the Romans at
the great ramparts I visited just outside of Dorchester in
England.

Apparently some of us fled west and survived. Later, a
Celtic great grand mother of mine was selected by a handsome
Saxon stud who wanted a wife. We took over that area of
Dorset and particularly the ashwood forests in the moist
valleys. We survived the Norman onslaught by becoming
trusted purveyors of ash for the king, the best burning
wood, least smoke, most heat.

You could have your hand cut off if men of the king found
you were using ashwood in your fire. It was reserved for the
King.

This mixing in Britain and Ireland of Angles, Saxons, Danes,
Norse, Dutch and all Nordic countries changed ancient
Britain to a merging of these Germanic languages along the
Dane Line, which basically was like an arrow between King
Alfred in the west and the Danes and Vikings in the east.

Ironically, the English language evolved at this meeting
point, where trading was allowed, and payments to the Danes
to not advance west. Here, all had to agree on how to trade,
say a horse for oats and barley and a pig.

The words were all different but common enough that even to
count from one to ten evolved around the germanic ein,
zwie, drie, funf, sax, seiben, acht, neuin under variations
of zen, or ten.

Gradually evolved a somewhat common English. Now,a thousand
years later, America and gradually much of the word have
adapted these old Sanskrit words enough that to talk to
anyone anywhere could be a variation of I hope you have ein
fine day. Did you sneeze? Gesundheit.

The author notices how science into the humanities to
measure happiness and bliss. Antique carpets always adds a
touch of happiness to life. Love and showing it is central
as you know, and can see here at Roman Antiques and Heritage

How To Approximate The Age of a Vintage Golf Club

Even though it is seldom easy to precisely distinguish an
antique golf club from one that is merely an old golf club,
there are several hints that can at least help us as
collectors of golf memorabilia, to date a vintage club with
relative accuracy, helping us to determine, ultimately, a
golf clubs value.

The following 5 point test, which is really a preliminary
golf club appraisal, can offer some quick insight on the
approximate age of golf golf collectibles. Determing the
age, as you would imagine, is the natural first step in
establishing vintage golf club values.

The Grip - The texture of the grip can offer a meaningful
hint about the age of an old golf club. Older clubs were
generally equipped wit flocked suede grips. Generally
speaking, clubs made after the early 1920's were
manufactured with leather grips. It is also important to
spend the time and energy to effectively determine whether
the grip of a vintage golf club under evaluation is original
or whether perhaps it could be a once or twice removed
replacement. An accurate assessment here is critical as you
begin your analysis.

The Club Face - The club face on antique golf irons is often
smooth. Although many players manually scored their club
faces, the marking of faces on vintage iron clubs was not
introduced until the first few years of the 20th century.
Again, even though this would certainly not rank as an exact
method of dating old golf clubs, a smooth face would
certainly indicate that you are in possession of a club that
dates prior to 1905.

The Wooden Shaft Test - Whether or not the shaft is made of
wood is a primary indicator of age. There were clubs
manufactured after 1930 where preowned golf clubs with metal
shafts were overlaid with plastic covers. Even though these
are often represented as authentic wooden golf clubs, the
old reliable magnet test can always uncover whether the
original shaft is wood. If it not, this is a post 1930 age
factor.

The Metal Club Head - Simple test. Prior to 1920, a
different grade of steel was used to manufacture clubheads.
This inferior grade of steel, as you would expect, results
in clubs which today look more dated; dark colored,
sometimes even rusty. An old golf club that still exhibits a
shiny clubhead would point to a piece dated post 1920.

Markings or Stamps - If there is a marking or shop stamp, an
Antique Gold Club Reference Guide , like our recommended
resource could be used to date the club pretty precisely.

As with many antiques, often times the best way to preserve
golf club value is to do nothing at all in the way of
polishing, or painting, or shaft repair that would
compromise the original integrity of the piece. Any
reputable antique dealer, and particularly those in the golf
collectibles arena, would be well equipped to help you
understand those things that would enhance value vs those
things which would compromise value.

Also, remember when acquiring a vintage golf club,
especially through a commercial channel, to ensure that you
receive a certificate of authenticity, and if possible, a
golf club appraisal with your purchase.

Antique denotes a traditional or centuries old styled. In
modern times, many people like to furnish their living
premises with the glorious, gorgeous, royal and everlasting
antique furniture.

Delicately carved furniture made from the finest hardwood
and other seasoned wood available, adored with the rich
ornamentation and using the finest upholstery for the
ultimate comfort, antique furniture are simply unique and
matchless.

Recreating the traditional lifestyle into the modern days by
giving your furniture a glamorous touch to make your living
exclusive and distinguished like a Victorian era, inclusive
of extremely ornate and exquisite wooden carving on display
with flair of lacquer polish. All the old furniture is not
considered as antique furniture but the furniture is made
keeping the ancient or traditional design could be called as
made as antique furniture.

The original antique furniture has now become a museum items
and very rarely they are being used. Use of antique
furniture normally makes your living style distinctive with
the culture and period of a traditional society.

The antique furniture symbolizes the glory of royal
furniture. It used to be heavily carved by the professional
craftsman, made using the finest and the most expensive wood
like mahogany with the reddish tinge, rosewood, black
walnut, bog oak and teak wood. Deep, dark and rich oak wood
was the most preferred furniture material. The delicate and
eye pleasing ornamental wooden carvings inclusive of the
natural theme or designs like flowers, fruit, animals and
human figures.

The antique furniture reflected the culture and social
customs prevailing in those days which used to be different
from country to country. The main source of antique
furniture design was the classic Victorian or Georgian
furniture that is the main reason that most antique
furniture looks alike due to its prevailing style and
influence in those days.

The antique furniture was simply unique in comfort zone and
appearance. Carving and scrolled lines were the chief
characteristics on legs, cartouche backs with scrolled
rounded contours, richly carved flowers, leaves, fruits and
birds with colorful ornamental paintings were creating a
lasting impression of glory. Moreover the antique furniture
was made of huge sizes in those days due to the lavish
living space.

Carvings based on natural element were the prime feature in
the most antique furniture. Antique furniture was made for
the class of people who could have afforded its making. It
was beyond the reach of ordinary people even in those days.
The classic range was normally used by the royals and cream
people of the society. The traditional furniture was made
while bending and shaping up the wood and it used to take
quite longer than the normal wooden furniture. The were made
taking great care and this is the reason they are still in
the highest demand worldwide. The collectors of the antique
furniture are prepared to pay any price for an original
antique piece of furniture.

How to learn about decorating rooms.

"Where do I start?" is the lament heard from most people
confronted with decorating a room for the first time.
Understanding the problems of room layout, different styles
of decorating, what period to decorate a room in, whether to
use antiques or reproductions (as well as how to tell the
difference and not be swindled) and all of the other
problems of decorating overwhelm most people. Those of us
who feel this way are better off leaving this issue to the
experts -

professional interior decorators. If, on the other hand, the
topic fascinates you and you want to try your hand at it, it
can be learned, just like anything else you put your mind
to.

First of all, determine what use the room will serve. Is it
a bedroom, or a bed-sitting room? Is it a casual living
room, a place for all of the family, or will it be more of a
formal area to greet and entertain guests? Will the man of
the house be using the room as an office/study, or will it
be more along the lines of an old English library?

Depending upon the space you have to work with, you will
have to make a choice between formal design and comfort. In
a small space, the two are not usually compatible. If you
are able to have a country home for comfort and a flat in
town for formal entertainment, you have the perfect
solution. Just host your formal occasions in town, and have
family and close friends for comfortable weekends in the
country.

It is easy enough to create a comfortable setting in your
home. You have only to choose plush, cozy fabrics, seating
that sinks when you sit in it, tables everywhere for
convenience and clutter. In the bedroom, think low lighting,
a variety of bed types depending on needs, such as king,
queen or even twin sizes for guests.

To decorate a room in a certain period, or a combination of
periods is a most difficult task if you are not familiar
with decorating with antiques. The one surefire way is to
shop each piece you are considering and then get a second
opinion. If you are interested in a desk, look at many
antique desks until you find the one that you like best, and
then bring back a friend or acquaintance who is more
knowledgeable than you are and ask them to help you with
your final decision, especially concerning the authenticity
of the antique. You should also do as much reading as you
can about the particular period that your new antique comes
from. Just as with any serious investment, you should be as
well informed as possible about the subject. In addition to
reading, buying additional pieces from time to time will
help you become an expert in that period of antiques. Really
good, very old pieces of furniture which are true antiques
are not easy to find today. Private collectors rarely let go
of quality pieces of fine old furniture, which makes them
even rarer and more expensive. And many of the really old
pieces are in museums today. These kinds of antiques are
usually in excellent condition because they have been held
by the same family or estate since they were originally
built by the master furniture maker.

Many pieces such as this are signed, just like a work of
art. At the most, you may be able to find some older
furniture that has come onto the market because the family
that held them has come into dire straits at one point or
another. This usually means that the furniture has been
handed from household to household and may have suffered
some damage instead of being coddled at the same grand
mansion for all of it existance. Though not as perfect,
older pieces such as this have a character of their own and
are usually very beautiful and demonstrate very fine
workmanship as well as wonderful form to suit their
function. Everyone has their own idea of what is beautiful.

Finding Memorabilia From Cary Grant

Cary Grant was one of Hollywood's leading men for a great
deal of time throughout the 1940s and 1950s. His work is
beloved by many, giving them the delight and inspiration
that so many of us seek to find through the movies. His
manner of style and charm was so distinct that many would
argue that no one has matched him to this day. It is
therefore only natural that people would start collections
based around Cary Grant memorabilia. These pieces have the
ability to make anyone feel more special and proud about
their celebrity collectibles and owning some of these pieces
of memorabilia can help anyone to have a collection to die
for.

You could begin to base a collection of Cary Grant
memorabilia around some of the many different photos which
have been taken of him during his lifetime. Prints of these
photos exist which were not only taken of him during
different red carpet events but that were also used directly
for publicity purposes for his films. These photos were
designed to get more people interested in the films which
were being released and having a charming photo of Cary
Grant promoting the film would only help.

Of course, many of these photos also were candid photos
which might have been snapped of Cary Grant at one point and
they grew into being photos which could be recognized by the
public. These photos of the great movie star grew into
iconic representations of the actor and anyone having one of
these photos in their possession could use it to enhance
their celebrity collectibles organization. Whether framed or
in a protected photo album, stunning prints of Cary Grant
photos can make any group of collectibles even more special.

Naturally, any of these collectible pieces could be enhanced
even more with an autograph from Cary Grant on them. Photos
are one of the easiest pieces which have been signed by Cary
Grant in the past, although one could have his signature on
anything from a book about Hollywood to a print of a script
from a film that he was in. These signatures, while being
interesting on their own, also bring the value of the piece
of memorabilia up drastically. There are only a limited
number of pieces in the world which have Cary Grant's
autograph on them and owning one of those pieces means that
your collection is worth quite a bit of money. Autographs
enhance any collection, and the same is true in the case of
Cary Grant.

Owning a film that Cary Grant starred in could also be
considered a piece of memorabilia, depending on the film.
While some of his films are incredibly well known and have
been reproduced on DVD, others are a little more obscure and
harder to find. Owning one of these more rare films is a
piece of memorabilia in its own right, allowing you a copy
of something which is not readily available to others. All
of these ways would give you a great collection of Cary
Grant memorabilia. You simply need to decide where you want
to start collecting first.

How to Make Money from Antiques Collecting

Antiques collecting has been - and probably always will be -
a very popular pastime for adults. Many individuals spend
countless hours sifting through flea markets and thrift
stores looking hit a goldmine with a valuable antique.

And, while the basics of this hyped-up hobby are fairly
straightforward, making money from collecting antiques may
not be as easy as it seems.

Many people think that buying and selling antiques is quick
and simple. The truth is, sometimes it can take years to
find an antique someone is willing to pay big bucks for ?
and sometimes it can take forever.

Reality is, you may never find an antique that is extremely
valuable, but you might have a lot of fun looking.

Here are a few tips to help you make money from antiques
collecting:

1. Look High and Low. Looking for a valuable piece (whether
it be furniture, cars etc) may not be as simple as coasting
through a flea market on a Sunday afternoon. Dedicated
antique collectors will search high and low to find the
right piece. Looking for items online may help, but most of
the antiques you?ll find online already have a known value
and will likely be expensive to purchase. They key is
finding something at a low price and later realizing you?ve
hit a goldmine.

2. Leave it Alone. If you think you?ve found a valuable
antique, the last thing you want to do is decrease its
value. Don?t try and clean with household cleaning products
and certainly don?t try and give it a ?makeover? by trying
to paint it/refurbish it to make it look better. Leave your
piece alone. The single fastest way to decrease the value of
antique is by changes its original condition ? after all,
that?s where all the value lies.

3. Sell It. A valuable antique won?t make you very much
money if you don?t know how to market the item and,
eventually, make the sale. The first thing you need to do is
take it to an antiques appraisal company to see the
potential value of the item. Once its worth has been
established, you can start marketing your item to potential
buyers. Don?t settle on a lower price than what the
appraisal company has told you your piece is worth. After
all,

it?s only going to increase in value the longer you keep it.
If you don?t need the money right away, we suggest holding
onto the item for as long as you can.

Well now that you know some of the basics behind antique
collecting, it?s time to start searching. Best of luck to
you. We hope you hit a goldmine!
